US planting calendars and growing guides

Planting dates depend on local climate, so we cover the United States one state at a time, starting with North Carolina.

States we cover

Gardening outside North Carolina?

Please don't use our North Carolina dates for another state. Even within North Carolina, recommended tomato transplanting starts two weeks later in the western mountains than in the central and eastern parts of the state, so a calendar from a different climate can easily be off by weeks.

Until we cover your state, look for a vegetable planting calendar from your state's land-grant university Extension service, and check average freeze dates for a weather station near you.

We add a state only after researching its own Extension publications and climate records. See our editorial policy for how that research works.
